Why is staying hydrated so important for healthy, glowing skin you ask….

Staying hydrated promotes skin circulation at its base so that the skin repair doesn’t decrease.  Drinking more fluids every day also improves your skin’s condition so you can have healthy, glowing skin this winter.

Water

Yes, no surprise there. Water keeps your skin hydrated—and staying hydrated makes your skin appear plump and less wrinkled. Without adequate water intake, skin appears; duller, wrinkled and the pores can be far more prominent.

The skin is our biggest organ. Just like any other part of the body, your skin is made up of cells. Like any other cell in the body, skin cells are made up of water. Without water, our organs will certainly not function at their best. What’s more, a variety of structures in the skin that support collagen require water to work effectively and as water is lost in large quantities every day, you need to replace it somehow.

Tip: If you’re getting bored with plain water, try sparkling water or adding your favourite fruit.

Green tea

This brew’s catechins like EGCG (antioxidants) help to boost blood flow and oxygen to the skin, which delivers key nutrients to keep your complexion healthy. It is also filled with inflammation-fighting antioxidants and has been shown to be very effective at preventing wrinkles. Another bonus for drinking Green Tea is that it fights acne based on its ability to lower levels of an acne-producing hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Tip: When you add a squeeze of citrus juice, the tea’s antioxidants get a boost of staying power, so they remain in and benefit the body longer.

Rooibos Tea

This tea is rich in alpha hydroxy acid and zinc. Both of these nutrients are incredible for the skin and can help alleviate several skin problems including acne, pimples, sunburns and uneven skin. Because of this alpha hydroxy acid and prevalent antioxidants, rooibos tea has a significant effect on wrinkle reduction if consumed regularly. Alpha hydroxy acid can revitalise the skin and leave an illuminating glow.

Zinc is also important and necessary for clear skin. This nutrient assists with building the structure of cell membranes, healing wounds, protects against UV rays and has anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific studies have also shown that the consumption of zinc may reduce acne.

Drinks to Avoid

Avoid Sugary drinks like high sugar juices, sodas, and sports drinks. These types of drinks can cause your skin major issues. When blood sugar levels are high, sugars can attach to proteins in collagen and produce compounds that cause the skin to sag and wrinkle. Yuck!

Hydrating your skin from the inside out isn’t an excuse to skip topical moisturisers. The water you drink may not affect your outermost layers of skin, the ones that get dried out from environmental elements. Moisturising your skin both internally and externally is a critical combination for healthy, glowing skin. So make sure you stay on top of your external skincare regime also.
