Skin Regeneration
Skin regeneration is our skins natural ability to shed, otherwise known as cell turnover. In our younger years, most of us are blessed with skin that will naturally shed off dead skin cells more frequently. That dust you see on your tv cabinet, well, sorry to inform you but 80% of it is your dead skin! So, what exactly happens to our skin as we age? Besides the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and the loss of collagen and elastin fibres, our skins ability to regenerate slows down. Continue reading to find out what happens to your skin and what you can do to keep it beautiful and glowing!
EARLY CHILDHOOD
When we are children cell turnover occurs every two weeks. There is no need for exfoliation at this age as your skin will naturally do this for you. Your skin care regime should be very simple in your early years, comprising of a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen.
TEENS
When you reach your teenage year's cell turnover will occur every 4 weeks. The need for exfoliation should be at its minimal unless you have problematic skin. Why? Well, if you suffer from acne, it is advised to use your exfoliant more frequently as an acne skin type sheds at a much slower rate. When shedding occurs for problematic skin, the excess oil production traps in dead cells resulting in clogging and breakouts. This will make the natural exfoliation process harder, so it's advised to manually do this for your skin. In your teenage years, your skincare routine is still simple unless you have an underlying skin condition.
YOUR 20's
When you reach your 20's your skin is at it's prime! It is important to keep up with your sunscreen as the sun will prematurely age you quicker than any other free radicals. Around 25-30 is when most people start to experience the first signs of aging - fine lines start to appear, you may notice your skin is appearing thinner, more sensitivity issues can arise and dryness. This is the age you should be tackling these skin conditions head-on, start introducing anti-aging products into your regime. Some add-on examples are concentrated serums, eye creams, night creams etc. to use as advised.
YOUR 30's
When you reach your 30's, you should be a pro at your skincare regime. You should be using a cleanser, exfoliant, moisturiser, serum/oil, eye cream, sunscreen and night cream. Include a mix of anti-aging products while taking into consideration any skin condition you may have. If you are unsure of what you should be using, ask for professional advice. Remember not to self-diagnose as this can cause more harm than good!
YOUR 40's
Your skincare regime should be in tip-top shape by the time you reach your 40's, predominantly consisting of anti-aging products. Generally, most skin types are resolved of any skin conditions they may have dealt with at a younger age. If this is the case for you then the use of exfoliation should increase to a couple of times per week. Additionally, the use of concentrated serums, eye creams, and night creams should be a daily thing at this age. The only skin condition to be wary of regarding exfoliation is rosacea. If you suffer from rosacea a mild exfoliation once a week/fortnight is recommended - when in doubt get advice from a professional.
YOUR 40’s PLUS
When you hit your 40's, 50's, 60's the collagen and elastin fibres in the middle layer of the dermis are breaking down. As a result, you will experience a loss of elasticity and firmness in the skin. Essentially, it's similar to what happens to a rubber band as it gets old and dry, it loses elasticity. Your skins natural regeneration process is at its slowest so the need for exfoliation is a must! A gentle form of exfoliation will help to minimise the effects of aging, giving your skin a more youthful appearance. The natural aging process can't be stopped but using the correct skincare products will slow it down. Keeping your skin strong, healthy, radiant and youthful. Skincare can be tricky and with so many brands on the market, it can be intimidating to know which one to go for. My advice is natural is always the best way to go as it won't cause any harm to your skin. And remember, the single biggest cause of damage to the skin as you age is not aging itself, it's sun exposure! So sunscreen it up ladies!!
